Safety – Security – Sustainability – Energy

Help us inspire and get inspired.

For 2019, the AEE SoCal Annual Conference theme will be Energy
Safety, Security, and Sustainability. Southern California in many
ways is a microcosm of what will impact the rest of the nation.
We have a co-existence of various industries like manufacturing,
farming, transportation, aerospace, retail, hospitality, professional
services, IT, and media, along with two of the largest ports in the
country.

Our chosen topics will undoubtedly be discussed for years to come,
since it takes a collaborative effort for every piece of the puzzle to fit
into place. Please consider participating to share your vision and
knowledge.

Safety
Californians have recently suffered some of the most devastating
disasters connected with the energy industry. The San Bruno and
Aliso Canyon gas pipeline/storage leakage incidents, Thomas and
Camp Fires–attributed to utility lines–caused irreparable damage
and loss. As energy professionals we must do everything we can to
develop safer technologies and practices, and accept climate
change as a new reality.

Security
The strength and function of our nation wholly depends on the reliability
and availability of our energy systems, yet the recent report from the
Director of National Intelligence sounded significant warnings regarding
the ability of our adversaries to interrupt both our electricity and natural
gas grid systems. The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Cybersecurity,
Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) developed CRISP
(Cybersecurity Risk Information Sharing Program) to combine
state-of-the-art threat analysis capabilities with US Intelligence insights to
identify sophisticated attacks targeting critical US energy infrastructure.

Sustainability
One of the most ambitious goals in the country to achieve Net Zero Energy
is California’s SB100, with the objective of 33% renewable energy by 2020,
50% by 2030, and 100% by 2045. This plan is highly supported by the
scientific community as one of the most important and crucial pieces of
legislation for the sustainability of the planet and the human race. To
achieve this goal, however, we will need to develop comprehensive
solutions.
