Utility Time of Use (TOU) Rate Plan Changes: Challenges & Solutions
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has instituted “Time of Use” (TOU) rate plans throughout California for commercial and agricultural energy users, and many residential customers. These plans vary the rate pricing according to the time of day, season, and day type (weekday or weekend/holiday).
A recent significant change has been approved and has been implemented by utilities that change the hours of the day that are designated as the more expensive “peak ” and the less expensive “off-peak” and “Super Off Peak” time periods.
These changes can have tremendous impact on the energy costs for a wide variety of businesses, and it is important to know details of the changes and strategies for adjusting energy use to accommodate the new TOU schedules.
